Taiwan is an island in the western Pacific Ocean off the mainland, separated from it by the Strait of Formosa.
Taiwan was occupied in 1945 after the Second World War and the defeat of the Japanese by the Republic of China, but not officially handed over to them. It is since 1949 the majority of the Republic, after the Chiang Kai-shek troops withdrew after losing the civil war against the People's Liberation Army of Mao Zedong on the island. At the same time Taiwan is claimed by the People's Republic of China, however, was never controlled by it. This is reflected in the Taiwan conflict.
Administratively, the island is associated with both countries as Taiwan Province. The legal status of Taiwan is still not cleared until today.
