The Great Divide Mountainbike Expedition
Whitefish - Polebridge
Wir starten Mitte Juni in Whitefish, und damit eigentlich etwas zu früh im Jahr. Wir müssen unsere Reisezeit mit den grossen Ferien an den amerikanischen Universitäten abstimmen, damit auch die Studenten in unserer Gruppe die ganze Reise mitmachen können.
Ein kurzer Ausritt mit den vollbeladenen Bikes bringt erste Erkenntnisse, wie es sich mit 35 kg Gepäck auf unbefestigten Strassen fahren lässt. Da mein Fahrradrahmen sich als zu weich erweist und sich das Rad kaum steuern lässt, kaufe ich am selben Tag noch einen Einradanhänger B.O.B Yak. Damit ist es dann auch mir möglich, am nächsten Tag die Strecke unter die Räder zu nehmen.
Startort der Route ist Roosville, eine kleine, ungefähr 100 Kilometer nördlich von Whitefish liegende Grenzstation. Für den Transport von Whitefish nach Roosville benötigt man ein Auto, falls man nicht mit dem Rad dorthin fahren will. Es ist vorteilhaft und spart Zeit, wenn man diesen Transport bereits von zu Hause aus organisiert.
Mitte Juni liegt noch meterhoher Schnee auf den zu Beginn der Reise zu befahrenden Pässen in Montana. Deshlb starten wir nicht in Roosville, sondern an der Kanadischen Grenze nördlich von Polebridge. Zwei gemietete Vans bringen uns und unsere Räder zum Startort.
